Cooperwood v. Kroger

This was a personal injury action wherein the Plaintiff Cooperwood, an elderly African American male, exited the Kroger store in Memphis, Tennessee, and slipped on wet tile, resulting in the rupture of his quadriceps muscles and tendons on both his leg. During the healing process, it re-ruptured. Suit was filed against Kroger in Shelby County Circuit Court of Memphis, Tennessee, and this case commenced to trial. Plaintiff had received a $40,000.00 to $50,000.00 offer prior to trial. The jury awarded the sum of $650,000.00 by unanimous verdict for the plaintiff. Plaintiff's counsel was Ralph E. Chapman of CHAPMAN, LEWIS & SWAN, and Sheldon Miller of Weiss & Miller of Memphis, Tennessee. Defense counsel was Chuck McPherson of Memphis, Tennessee.
